We'll recap the weeks cycling starting with Sunday and working backwards. The George's Spring Series wrapped up yesterday in Emmett with fantastic team results! Chuck, Charles and Doug found them selves in a group of 10 riders at the bottom of "freeze out". With good team tactics and solid climbing both Nick Smith and Doug Lamott not only climbed like rock stars, they also climbed up the General Classification (GC), and finished the Spring Series overall in 4th for Nick (3rd in the stage!) and 3rd overall for Doug. It's awesome to see TAI/Dobbiaco on the GC podium! They got help in the Masters B group from road racers Stu Bryson Chuck Keene, Charles Stearns and Multi-sport athletes Aaron Tabor, Matt Booth, Rob Barnes, and Matt McDonagh. Our sponsor, Paul McKenna from Meridian Cycles also placed 12th on the stage. Great work this year guys!

Nine riders took to Men's Cat 5 race with Derek Hudson leading our group to a 12th place finish. A flat tire on the last climb took Mike Hocklander from 3rd to 13th. And in Men's Cat 4, Greg Adams placed 8th.

So working backwards to Saturday, there's a good story about a 70 mile per hour bicycle.

Real quick, to recap the Time Trial racing. The wind started out light and gave many of our Triathletes from Performance High's Tri 3 program a perfect window of racing. In the womens category, Tegan Brown, Kathy Starman, Michelle Kormanic and Tiedji Baker tested their training legs against the clock as they prepare for Ironman 70.3 Boise and Arizona. Performing well for the men in the triathlon program were Lance Millington, AJ Little and Andrew Beck. As many of you know the wind really picked up as the day progressed. Way to bear down and beat the winds guys!

And that's where our story of the 70mph bicycle comes in. So Matt McDonagh and I had just finished having a conversation about "hokey" bike racks. You can see where this is going. Matt headed home and it wasn't long before a push of wind from a semi-truck caught his bike in just the wrong way. WOOSH! Matt watched helplessly in the rear view as his carbon fiber Trek bounced furiously down I-84. The bike bucked, bounced and spun like a ping pong ball in a dryer. By the time he made it back to his bike it had come to rest in the middle of the freeway and cars were zipping around it like road kill. Matt scooped up the carbon carcass and chauffeured it home.

Fortunately Matt had taken a bicycle maintenance class and after close inspection of the frame, began to rebuild and repair his bike. With wheels trued, new grip tape and plenty of scars on all the shiny bits, Matt resurrected his carbon steed and was able to race the next day!

I also got an update from Nick Smith about Boise's first "Rhonde" last Saturday. Nick estimated 100 cyclist showed up to climb every hill in the Boise front. The pack stayed together for much of the ride and if someone fell off the pace, they could always jump back in with the leaders as they came back down. Riders were graced with wonderful weather, the opportunity to meet other cyclist in Boise and climb climb climb. Nick notes he'll be adding it to next years ride calendar. I'll take his review as two wheels up for "Rhonde van Boise".

So what is our next big chapter in TAI/Dobbiaco racing? Well "big" is the key word! The inaugural Ironman St. George welcomes Nicol Chandler, Marty Lindgren and Eric Bowen. Wish them well and watch their results Saturday on line at http://www.ironmanstgeorge.com/ Go get 'em and have fun!

Keep me informed,
Brian Baker

Monday Morning Extra: As we train for our big events almost everyone gets a "what was that" moment when their body fights back. What is it? Why do I hurt and what caused it?

Well I have no clue either!

Make a reservation to find out what the "Hidden Culprit" could be. I have a feeling team sponsor Therapeutic Associates has an answer. That would be funny though if you showed up and Matt Booth said, "I was asking you, what is it and how do you fix it." Wink

Have a great week!
